End of Semester Thoughts

I really can’t believe that the semester is already over! Do not get me wrong, I am happy to be done with another semester of grad school, but it has definitely gone fast. I have to say that there are a lot of classes that I have taken that I have not truly gotten anything useful out of that I can bring with me as I enter the classroom as a teacher. However, I can definitely say that Introduction to Education Technology has NOT been one of these classes. I WISH that I could take everything that we have learned this semester and implement it in my classroom as soon as possible. But I have learned to take this new knowledge and fit it in little by little into my lesson plans.

For me, I think the most powerful thing I have learned this semester is how to use technology to connect my students with students around the world. This is what I did my research project on and it is absolutely what I am most excited about. As a language teacher, I think this will give my students truly meaningful ways to use the target language and a motivation to learn. However, I hope that teachers in every subject would want to connect their students to the rest of the world. I think in this day and age it is almost a disservice to NOT do this. Students are definitely going to have to know how to interact with people from different cultures when they leave the school environment. So why shouldn’t we help them to do this in any way we can? And I also think that we can use these internet technologies to connect students with others from around the world to facilitate cultural awareness and break down stereotypes which I think is so important for everyone!

I think out of all the technologies that we have learned about this semester, the three I will mostly likely use the most in my classroom in the future are blogs, Google Docs (specifically Google Forms) and videoconferencing technology (Skype) if the school district I work for has the tools available to work with these technologies. These are the ones that I am most comfortable with as a teacher and I think will benefit my students the most at this point in time. I really like the idea of a blog in a language classroom because students can use the target language to communicate with such a larger audience than just me, the teacher. I also think Google Docs is an excellent tool to use in the classroom for quick forms of assessment instead of wasting endless amounts of paper. And finally, I hope that I can connect with other teachers and professionals around the world (that I find by using my Professional Learning Network!) to bring them into my classroom and bring my classroom to them with videoconferencing technology.

I am so glad that I have taken this class and learned the things that I did! I know that my classroom will be a better place for my students because of it!

A Student’s Perspective

I was sitting at a family party when I remembered that I had to do a blog for this week.  I was asking people for advice about what I should write about related to education and technology and my ten year old cousin said “Give me the computer.” So I gave her my computer and asked her to write about her experience with technology in her school and this is what she wrote:

There are many different technologies in the world today. I will share with you an example of this.

In some classrooms there are a board that teachers put on their whiteboards which you can write on at their desks, and the words appear on the board. I think that these are very useful objects, but I could imagine many errors developing with these; such as getting stuck or jammed, or developing viruses.

Even though, technologists will most likely be able to clear these up in a jiffy, so do not be worried.

I would like the technology of computers not collapsing on you all the time. Obviously, this cannot happen very soon.

I have many things of my own that I enjoy on the computer. One is that you can write stories on Microsoft Office. Also you can do blogs like this one , telling all about yourself, and what you think. That is one thing I would like to do at school. –Emma

I couldn’t believe how well she could navigate the computer and type this so easily (this only took her about five minutes). I thought it would be a nice change to have a student’s perspective for once!!

Can a Webquest be Worthwhile?

As I expressed in class the other day, I have not had extremely good experiences with Webquests as a student, especially in college, and therefore do not think very highly of this kind of activity.  The Webquests that I have had to complete in the past have been nothing more than “Here is a list of questions. Go find the answers on the  Internet, write them down and hand them in.” I can remember spending hours looking for one specific fact that seemed to be nowhere to be found, just so I could fill in the answer sheet or write the paper and finally be done. It always seemed like such a waste of time. I was actually really surprised at how few people raised their hand when asked if they have had to do a Webquest in the past. At first, I thought you were all very lucky.

However, as I read the resources for this week’s class and learned more about what Webquests are really supposed to be like, I realize that the ones that I had to complete as a student were not the way it is supposed to be. Most of the time, the questions that I had to answer were not thought provoking or questions that involved critical thought in anyway.  I now realize that the questions we ask our students to explore in a Webquest assignment should be open to different interpretations and not have an answer that can be written in a fill in the blank fashion. If this is the case, I believe that a Webquest could be a great method to use in the classroom to spark conversations and critical thought and also help students to view an issue from many different perspectives. I now understand how this type of activity can be considered to be inquiry based learning.

I do not know if I will ever use Webquests in my future classroom, especially because of the experiences I have had. But I will keep an open mind as I complete this assignment and try to create a meaningful Webquest that students can use to explore new ideas.

Podcasts and the Language Classroom

I am really excited that we are learning about and working with podcasts in class because I think they would be a really great resource to use in any type of language classroom. Before this week I knew how to find and access different podcasts but I had no idea how to create them myself. Now that I am learning, I have the option of creating podcasts for my students and even giving my student the opportunity to create podcasts themselves.

In the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program, we are always talking about finding ways to incorporate authentic language use into classroom experiences. Listening to and even more, creating podcasts would be a really great way to do this for English language learners. As we’ve talked about in class, the idea of having an audience is a really powerful tool for students, especially English language learners. If they know that others outside the class will listen to and need to understand what they say, they may focus more on the language they use and ultimately learn more through the process.

Another thing that I think podcasts would be really helpful with is giving English language learners the opportunity to practice and synthesize academic and social language skills. A lot of times, these things are taught separately and it may be hard for English language learners to put the two skills together without explicit instruction on how to do so. However, the nature of a podcast makes it a perfect medium to do this. Because any podcasts that students create would be about the content that is being learned in the course, students would undoubtedly have to use the academic language and content vocabulary that is related to the topic, therefore practicing and utilizing academic vocabulary. However, a podcast also needs to be comprehensible, entertaining and almost as if the speaker is having a conversation with the listeners. In order to do this, students will need to use appropriate forms of social language to create and effective podcast. Therefore, podcasts are another great technology to use in the  classroom to help foster a development of many different types of language skills.

Update!

A couple weeks ago I blogged about having the opportunity to work with some students using wikis and I thought I would update on this topic. I have only been there one day since the day I introduced them to wikis and they had to work on something else while I was there today. However, when I first introduced it to them they really did seem to think it was cool that what they were posting could be seen on the Internet by anyone!

Even though the students haven’t had too much of a chance to work on their wikis, the teacher that I am observing seems to have really caught on and is really excited about the idea of using them in the classroom! She didn’t know much about them before, but today I helped her to start one that her class can use for a research project that they are doing! She is linking all different things to the wiki and providing them with a lot of information that they can use for their project. At some point in the future, she may have them edit the page as well! I was really happy that I could pass on some of the interesting things that we are learning about in class to someone who can use them in real life!

On a completely unrelated note, I saw something else while I was observing today that really made me laugh. The teacher wanted to get on Youtube to show a video to help explain a particular topic to one of the students who is a beginning English language learner. Unfortunately, Youtube is blocked in the school. But, the teacher said “Oh, it’s ok…She knows how to get around the block!” I just find this type of thing really interesting. How effective is it for a school to have a block on Youtube that is essentially only blocking the teachers from using it for educational purposes because all of the students have figured out how to get around it? In one of my first posts, I talked about how things like this happened all the time at my high school with our laptop program. I think it really just goes to show how much schools and administrators really need to evaluate what is going on with technology in schools and hopefully begin to find ways to embrace the technology that is available.

So Much Technology!

Right now I am in Boulder, Colorado visiting a friend for the weekend and it is beautiful! Yesterday as I was traveling on the planes over, I couldn’t help but think about how much we are affected by technology today. I was sitting in Atlanta waiting for my layover flight to arrive and a man from the airline was coming around and handing out cards with codes for free wireless. I thought this was nice to be able to use your computer for free while you were waiting in the airport. But I found out that these cards were to be used for the wireless ON the plane! I was so surprised by this, that it was possible to use the internet while flying 30,000 feet above land.

You might think that this has nothing to do with education, but I really think that it does. The fact that people have the ability to use their computers and phones or other gadgets to connect to the internet EVEN while flying says something about our society and the students that we will have. They are used to using these technologies ALL the time and having a constant access to them. So why is it that in school we tend to take this away? I think this experience just really made me think more about what we have been talking about in class, that many of our schools are SO far behind the times in terms of technology.

Enhancing Global Perspectives with Technology

As I discussed in a previous post, my research topic was about the use of technology in schools to enhance students’ global perspectives. In that post, I listed some facts that I came across during my research that were pretty depressing about the knowledge of American students after graduating from the school system. However, it is not just these facts that scare me , but it is also some experiences that I have had in the classroom that make me believe that we REALLY need to work hard as teachers to enhance students’ global awareness. There have been too many times that I have heard kids make racist remarks, that they don’t even realize their making. I truly believe that if students really understood the cultures in question, they wouldn’t have these ideas. I have also heard students say many times that they don’t need to learn a foreign language because “everybody knows English.” While it is true that English is becoming more and more popular around the world, I think this attitude contributes to the lack of motivation that there is in many students and even in many schools to learn more about the world around them.

One quote that really stood out to me in my research was “…for the most part, schools of today are out of sync with the realities of the global world.” When I first read that quote I quickly agreed and thought, yes, our schools do seem to be out of touch with the global world. But as I continue to think about this quote, I want to ask why? Why is it that our schools, the places that have the responsibility to prepare students for their future, are out of touch with reality? This just doesn’t seem right. I really think that it is important for individual teachers, schools and districts continually ask the question : What do we want our students to get from this experience? What is our ultimate goal? And something that I really learned from my research is that the answer to these questions cannot be static and unchanging because society is constantly changing. If we do not prepare our students to succeed in society, aren’t we doing them a huge disservice?

Fortunately, I also found a lot of hope in my research. I read many articles that talked about the way teachers are using a lot of the technologies that we are talking about in class to bring students in contact with their peers in the global community. Teachers are using email, blogs, wikis, social networking tools and videoconferencing software to open up school boundaries and expose students to the world. I talked about this a little in my other post,  but the article that stood out to me the most was one about Eastview Middle School and the way that teachers in this school used technology to truly connect students with the world. Teachers from this school used videoconferencing technologies to allow students to talk to others their own age from other parts of the world. For example, students in a health class talking about the HIV/AIDS epidemic met and conversed with a girl from South Africa whose parents both died of AIDS and who is currently living with HIV herself. She was able to share these experiences with students and make a personal connection with them. This honestly sends chills down my spine because I can’t even imagine the impact this must have had on these students, to hear someone their age going through this type of ordeal. What do you think benefited them more, this experience or reading about this problem and then answering questions on a test?

The amazing thing about this school was that it was not just this one teacher that used these technologies and ideas in the class. Students seemed to be exposed to these things in many different classes and in many different ways. At the end of the article, the authors discussed how students were inspired by these experiences to actually do something to help their new friends in the global community by raising awareness and holding different types of fundraisers. I just really think that THIS is exactly what education should be about. Students weren’t forced to do these types of things after the school day was over. However, the experiences that they had in the classroom caused them to WANT to do something and WANT to participate in the global community.

I really hope that there are a lot of other schools doing these types of things and I hope that I can use technology to bring these types of experiences to my future students. I have had so many people tell me that it is great to think about all these wonderful things now, but once I get in the classroom “reality” will hit. I REALLY, REALLY hope that this is not true. Because to me, reality seems like what is happening at Eastview Middle School. This research has shown me that these things are possible, but that they are also not happening in enough schools. I really hope, for students’ sake, this changes SOON.

Trying it Out!

Today I was doing my observations and my cooperating teacher told me that she was stuck on what to do with a particular class. I am observing a high school ESOL teacher (English to Speakers of Other Languages). The class in question is one with five advanced English language learners between tenth and twelfth grade.

Well, when the teacher mentioned that she was trying to think of an activity to do next, I started to tell her about all the really great things we are learning about in Education Technology. I told her about Skype, and blogging, and wikis etc. She seemed really excited about the ideas. At the end of the day she asked me if I would mind thinking up some kind of project using one of the technologies that I told her about. I told her that I wouldn’t mind at all and that I’d love the chance to start using these technologies in a meaningful way with students.

I have until next Friday to come up with something to do, but what I am thinking of right now is having them work on a wiki project that is very similar to the one that we are doing in class. Except, I think it would be kind of cool for the students, instead of picking just a topic like we did, to pick some sort of cause that they are interested in or feel passionate about (i.e. global warming, world hunger, etc). By doing this, the purpose of their wiki would be to find information and sites to raise awareness for this cause, in hopes that they will share their wiki website with others.  I think this would be a great way for these advanced students to continue to progress in their writing skills ( I would have them annotate the sources like we are), researching skills, and reading skills while hopefully pursuing something that they are truly interested in. I will continue to try to work out the details and update as this progresses. Any suggestions would, of course, be welcome! :)

Why we NEED to Step Up Technology in our Schools…

After class this week, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to write my blog entry.  But then, something kept popping back into my mind over and over from an article that I read for my research paper and I thought it might be a good thing to share.

In an article called “Using Internet Technology Tools to Teach about Global Diversity,” I read some pretty disturbing facts. According to surveys administered to three thousand 18-24 year olds, 11 % of Americans could not locate the United States on a map, 63 % couldn’t find Iraq on a map, 75 % did not know that the majority of the population in Indonesia is Muslim, and only 50% of Americans surveyed think it is important to be able to know where in the world places are located that are talked about in the news or know a foreign language (Glimps & Ford, 2008).

Now, I know that we have all heard facts like this before. But the one that shocked me the most was the 11 percent of Americans who could not identify the United States on a map! There is something so, so wrong with that…

The point that this article tries to make is that many American students are just not prepared to face the increasingly interdependent global community that we live in, and I think they make a good point. Many times students and teachers are so focused on  knowledge that they will need for a test and entirely miss the bigger picture. This article also points out that we have always been able to point to a map and have students memorize the location or statistics about other countries, but it is with technology that we can give students a real reason and motivation to know and remember these things.  If we use technologies such as Skype to bring students from around the world into our classrooms, this type of experience will allow our students to get new perspectives about what is going on in the world. Getting to know peers from other countries will naturally spark students’ interest in learning about other cultures in a more profound way. One of the other articles I read talked about connecting students to others their own age in Sudan when talking about the AIDS epidemic in Africa. It is one thing for students to hear this from a teacher or read about it in a text book. But it is another completely to hear students your own age talk about how their lives have been affected by the disease. The American students that participated in this experience not only learned the necessary information, but took action and started fundraising efforts in their own community to help people around the world.

There are SO many possibilities and I am glad that I am taking this class to actually build the knowledge base and skill set to implement some of these things in my own classrooms. I think it is very easy as a teacher to get overwhelmed by everything going on and just put these types of things aside for “another time” in the future. The thing is, our students need it NOW. These types of experiences will be the things that make our students’ education truly meaningful.

Interesting Resource!

I don’t have much time to write but I really wanted to share this interesting resource that I found using Google Scholar. It is an Online Handbook from Colorado University and it seems to have some really interesting stuff related to A LOT of the topics we have been talking about in class. I am using information from the chapter on Twitter for my paper, but I thought some of the other stuff may be useful to others, so I thought I’d share!
